The Writers in Prison Committee (WiPC) of International PEN records of persecuted writers are updated daily. For up-to-date information on a particular case or country, contact Sweden PEN Centre or the WiPC headquarters in London. Anyone wishing to take action on any individual mentioned in this Case List should also contact Sweden PEN Centre or the WiPC headquarters for any update there may be on the case and for advice on appeals.

This report, records over 690 instances of attacks upon writers and journalists in the period July to December 2003, providing brief summaries of each case.

In the whole of 2003, the WiPC monitored 1,068 attacks upon writers, journalists, editors, publishers and others working in the print media in over 100 countries. It includes:

26 killed
213 in prison
263 standing trial
64 under threat of death
286 briefly arrested and harassed

A total of 40 writers are currently held in prisons in China, Vietnam and Burma for their writings. Almost as many are held in just one country, Cuba, where 38 writers are detained, all but four of whom arrested in a crackdown in March 2003.
